Free vinyl crackle plugin: dust, pops and hiss that play along

A bed of vinyl crackle, tape hiss or hum makes a clean production feel worn and lived-in. Here's how to use noise without burying the mix, the free plugins that add it, and how COLONY does it.

What a vinyl or noise plugin adds

Record noise is more than hiss: a steady bed of groove noise, dust that ticks, the odd pop and scratch, and rumble from the turntable. Tape adds hiss, and old electrical gear adds hum.

Most vinyl plugins pair the noise with tone shaping - softer highs and lows - and some add a slow pitch wobble, like a slightly warped record.

Keep it musical, not fake

  • Keep it low. Noise works best when you feel it more than hear it.
  • Let it follow the music. Noise that ducks under loud parts or stops in silence sounds far more natural than a constant bed.
  • Avoid obvious loops: a crackle that repeats every two seconds gives itself away.
  • Filter the noise as well as the music, so both sit in the same space.
  • A touch of pitch wobble completes the worn-record feel; keep it subtle on anything tonal.

Record noise in COLONY

COLONY's COLOR Cell has a noise layer with four types: Vinyl, Tape (hiss), Static (bursty crackle) and Hum (50 Hz with its harmonics). The Vinyl bed is a recording of a real record's groove noise, with computed rumble at 33⅓ rpm and dust, ticks, pops and scratches that come round again on each turn of the record, as they would on a real one.

Level sets how loud it is and Dynamics makes it duck under the music or follow it. The noise only plays while audio passes through and COLOR's amount is up, so silence stays silent. Pair it with COLOR's Vinyl style for the tone and MOTION's Wow target for pitch wobble; 12 of the factory presets are tagged Lo-Fi.

What it doesn't do: the noise can't play on its own without input, there's one Character control rather than separate dust, pop and rumble knobs, and the record always turns at 33⅓ rpm. For a wider lo-fi toolkit, see free alternatives to RC-20 Retro Color.

FAQ
How do I add vinyl crackle to a track?

Put a vinyl or noise plugin on the track or bus, start with the noise barely audible and let it duck under the loud parts. Roll off a little top and bottom on the music too, so the noise and the tone match.

Why does my vinyl crackle sound fake?

Usually because it's too loud, too constant or loops too obviously. Lower it, let it react to the music, and use a source with random dust and pops rather than a short repeating sample.

Is iZotope Vinyl free?

iZotope lists Vinyl as a free download on its website (checked 2 October 2026).

Can COLONY play vinyl noise on its own?

No. COLONY's noise only plays while audio passes through the plugin and COLOR's amount is above zero, so it never hisses over silence.
