Free reverb plugin: rooms, plates and when to use an insert
Reverb places a sound in a space - a small room, a plate, a hall that never ends. Here's how the main controls work, which styles suit which sounds, when to use a send or an insert, and the free reverbs worth trying.

Add warmth, width, space and movement to drums, keys, bass and loops — six effects in one plugin, moved together by one ENERGY knob.
How a reverb works
A reverb imitates the reflections of a space. The first, distinct ones (early reflections) tell your ear the size and shape of the room; then they blur into a tail that fades away.
- Pre-delay is the gap before the reverb starts. A few dozen milliseconds keep a vocal or snare attack clear of its own tail.
- Decay is how long the tail takes to fade. Short for drums and busy parts, long for pads and ambient textures.
- Damping lets the highs fade faster than the lows, like soft surfaces in a real room.
- Cutting the lows of the reverb keeps the low end of the mix clean.
Which style for which sound
Keep the lead vocal close with a short decay and some pre-delay; let the background parts sit further back with longer, darker tails.
- Rooms: drums and percussion, to glue a kit together without making it sound far away.
- Plates: vocals and snares - a dense, bright reverb that sits well in a mix.
- Large halls and ambient spaces: pads, chords and atmospheres that should float.
Send or insert?
On a send, one reverb set to 100% wet is shared by many tracks. That glues them into the same space and saves CPU, and it's how most mixes handle their main reverb.
On an insert, the reverb belongs to one sound: you blend it with a mix control and it becomes part of that sound's character. That's where ducking helps - the tail pulls back while the sound plays and blooms in the gaps.
Reverb in COLONY
COLONY's SPACE Cell is an algorithmic reverb: early reflections and diffusion feed an eight-line feedback delay network. It has six styles - Room, Plate, Club, Warehouse, Dream and Air - and Pre-Delay up to 200 ms, Decay from 0.1 to 20 seconds, Size, Damping, Tone, Width and Duck, which lowers the reverb while the dry signal plays. Freeze holds the tail for as long as you like.
SPACE is an insert reverb. The dry signal always passes and the reverb is added to it, so there's no 100%-wet setting for a send bus, and the input is summed to mono before the reverb. For the shared send reverb of a mix, use a dedicated plugin like the ones below.

What is the best free reverb plugin?
It depends on the job. For a send reverb shared by many tracks, use a dedicated reverb you can run 100% wet. For reverb as part of one sound, an insert reverb with a mix and duck control is quicker.
Should reverb go on a send or an insert?
Main mix reverbs usually go on a send at 100% wet, shared by several tracks. Use an insert when the reverb is part of one sound's character and you want to blend it with a mix control.
What does pre-delay do?
It delays the start of the reverb by a few milliseconds, so the attack of the dry sound - a vocal consonant, a snare hit - stays clear before the tail comes in.
Can COLONY's SPACE be used on a send?
Not well: SPACE always passes the dry signal and adds the reverb, so it has no 100%-wet setting. It's designed as an insert reverb inside COLONY.
