Free EQ for FL Studio: a dynamic EQ for the mixer, next to Parametric EQ 2

The EQs FL Studio already gives you

The mixer track EQ is a fixed three-band design: low shelf, peaking and high shelf. It's ideal for quick tone moves without loading anything. Fruity Parametric EQ 2 is the real workhorse: seven bands with their own shapes, cut slopes up to 48 dB/oct, a spectrum with a heatmap, a linear-phase mode next to the standard one, and a spare bank for quick A/B. Fruity 7 Band EQ is the low-CPU, graphic-style option for broad strokes.

None of them react to level. FL Studio handles level-dependent jobs with other tools: a compressor keyed from another track (Fruity Limiter's sidechain, see our FL Studio sidechain guide) or a Peak Controller. Those duck the whole signal. A dynamic EQ ducks only the band that's in the way.

• Parametric EQ 2: precise static cuts and boosts, and linear phase when you need it.
• A dynamic EQ: sibilance, a resonance that only rings on loud notes, kick/808 overlap.

Which AURORA file FL Studio should load

FL Studio hosts VST3 on Windows and macOS, Audio Units on macOS, and CLAP from FL Studio 2024.1 on. AURORA ships all of those, so you have a choice. The sound is the same in every format. On FL Studio 2024.1 or newer, VST3 and CLAP both work well; on an older version, use VST3. Pick one format and stick with it, so every project recalls the same plug-in.

Scan AURORA in with the Plugin Manager

FL Studio only lists plug-ins it has scanned. After installing, open the Plugin Manager and run a verified scan, so FL knows AURORA is an effect and files it in the right place.

• Windows: run Install Aurora.cmd from the zip. macOS: copy 13x Aurora.vst3 (and the .clap or .component if you want those) into the matching folders under ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins.
• Open Options → Manage plugins (the manual also reaches it via Options → File settings → Manage plugins).
• Keep Verify plugins ticked and run Find more plugins. A verified scan sorts each plug-in into Effects or Generators.
• On macOS, AURORA installs to the per-user Library folder. If the scan doesn't find it, add ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 (or …/CLAP) to the search paths and scan again.
• New plug-ins land in the Browser under Plugin database → Installed → Effects → New. Mark AURORA as a favorite and it shows up in every mixer slot's menu.

Recipe 1: a kick-keyed dip in the 808, not a full pump

A compressor keyed by the kick pulls the whole 808 down, including the harmonics that make it audible on small speakers. A dynamic band keyed by the kick dips only the low end where the two overlap, and only while the kick plays.

• Put AURORA in an insert slot on the 808 (or bass) mixer track.
• Select the kick's mixer track, then right-click the send arrow at the bottom of the 808 track and choose Sidechain to this track.
• In AURORA's wrapper, open the plug-in options (gear icon) → Processing → Connections and set its sidechain input to the kick's track. Auto map inputs does the same in one click.
• In AURORA, add a bell where the kick's weight sits, switch the band to dynamic and set its detector to sidechain.
• Lower the threshold until the band moves on each kick, and keep the range modest (a few dB). Use the band's Listen to hear exactly which frequencies you're ducking.

Recipe 2: clean up a sample or a vocal with Smart Ops

Chopped samples and bounced loops often carry a ringing note or a harsh edge you can't fix at the source. Put AURORA on the sample's mixer track, choose De-resonate in Smart Ops and play the loop for at least two seconds. The suggested bands appear dashed on the curve before anything changes. Apply them, then trim any band by hand. Revert takes back only what Smart Ops wrote, never your own edits.

On a vocal, De-ess does the same for sibilance: it writes a dynamic band that only bites on the 's' sounds. Switch on Delta to hear only what AURORA removes. If you can hear words in the Delta signal, the band is too wide or too deep. More on the technique in how to de-ess a vocal.

Recipe 3: linear phase on the master, without breaking timing

AURORA has three phase modes. Zero latency and Natural (analog-matched) add no delay at all, so they're safe while you record or play live. Linear phase avoids phase shift around steep cuts, but it needs look-ahead. AURORA reports that latency to FL Studio, and FL's plug-in delay compensation keeps the rest of the project in time. The plug-in wrapper's Info section shows the latency each plug-in reports.

A practical split: Natural on individual tracks, Linear phase only on the master or a bus where phase coherence matters, and back to Zero latency while you track vocals through the project. Auto gain keeps the before/after comparison at equal loudness, so you judge the change, not the volume.
